Last Sunday Tammy, Olivia and I made our trip to NYC for the Five Boro Tour, a 42 mile tour through 5 boroughs of car less streets! This was Liv's first time in the tour and it was a great experience for her. We started out jumping on the train in White Plains (Thanks to cousin Eddy) and arrived in Grand Central by 6:30 am with many like minded cyclists. It is quite a feeling walking through Grand central with your bike at that hour! Once we hit 42st it was a exciting ride down to Battery park to jump on line with 32,000 other cyclists. I was a little nervous at first watching Liv rip through the streets like a bike messenger but she quickly adapted to the environment and did awesome. After about a 15 min ride we found ourselves enjoying our morning coffees in front of the construction site of the World Trade Center. This site still gives chills as you stand there and reflect. By approximately 8:30am the tour finally started and we were under our way through lower Manhattan. I was so proud of Liv as she pedaled her way to central Park and rode along with Tammy and I like a seasoned rider. The cool thing is when your in a tour of this size it is wild to stand up on your pedals and see as far forward and back as you can and realize your in a sea of cyclists. Now about 25 miles deep and afternoon and temps getting toward the 90's we needed to stop for drinks and sun block. The three of us let the sun get the better of us but not enough to stop, we needed to continue on toward the festival in Staten Island. While we were riding it was so cool to travel these roads with out traffic and as we were riding to look out over the water and see the city skyline. When we got to the festival it was very crowded and we managed to find a great vendor selling all sorts of cool bike jewelery made from spokes and other bike parts. After a quick bite to eat we shuffled off toward the ferry so that we could get back to Manhattan, thanks to Tammy's new subway riding skills we were able to hop a ride back up to Times Square making it easy to get back to Grand Central!! All in all it was a banner day! We all had a blast and enjoyed a tour around the Big Apple on our bikes!!
